The old Rank Hovis flour mill sits on top of a hill in the centre of the town of Ramsgate. The gates are locked, windows boarded up, and with ‘no entry’ signs nailed to all over them. But I want to go inside to witness the presence of the invisible.
I want to enter the milling rooms, the vast grain stores, to meet the meal-making machines, which are now still, suspended. I want to make photographs of this place, large, long-exposure pinhole pictures, of what lingers here. To capture the last residues of forgotten particulates and the memory of the magical activity of transmutation…
I want to wait and watch the wandering flour that has been left behind as it united with its sister substance, dust, the ground matter of the place itself.
I want to record this melding of container and contained…. and merge myself with it.
